Hyperhidrosis (Excess Sweating) Treatment at The Wright Practice, Harley Street

Hyperhidrosis, the medical term for excessive sweating, is a condition where the body produces far more sweat than is needed for temperature regulation. It can affect the underarms, hands, feet, or face, and for many patients it is a source of significant daily embarrassment and discomfort.

At The Wright Practice, Dr Dan Wright offers an effective, minimally invasive treatment using botulinum toxin (Botox) injections, with results that typically last around six months.

What is the treatment for hyperhidrosis at The Wright Practice?

Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections into the affected area, which temporarily block the nerve signals that trigger sweat gland activity.

Where can it be treated?

Underarms, hands, feet, and face. Underarm and foot treatment is £595. Hand treatment is £475.

Does it hurt?

Local anaesthetic is applied beforehand to ensure the process is as comfortable as possible.

How long do results last?

Around six months for most patients. Sweating typically reduces by more than 80%.

How quickly will I see results?

A reduction in sweating is usually noticeable within three to four days, with full effects at around two weeks.

What is the first step?

An initial consultation is required at £150 (redeemable against treatment cost if taken within one month). Book a consultation or call +44 (0)207 139 1833.

How does botulinum toxin treat excessive sweating?

Sweat production is controlled by chemical signals sent from nerves to the sweat glands. Botulinum toxin (Botox) works by temporarily blocking those signals, which reduces the amount of sweat the gland produces. The treatment does not affect sensation in the skin.

The injections are placed just below the skin surface in the affected area using very fine needles. Local anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand, so most patients experience only mild discomfort during the procedure.

The procedure takes around 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area treated, and there is no clinical downtime. You can return to normal light activity the same day.

What areas does The Wright Practice treat for hyperhidrosis?

Underarms – £595 The most commonly treated area. Botulinum toxin is placed across the underarm in a grid pattern to deactivate the sweat glands evenly.

Hands – £475 Palmar hyperhidrosis (excessive hand sweating) can significantly affect daily activities, from handshakes to keyboard work. Treatment with local anaesthetic allows the injections to be well tolerated.

Feet – £595 Plantar hyperhidrosis (excessive foot sweating) is treated in the same way as the underarms and hands, and can significantly reduce associated odour and discomfort.

Teeth grinding (bruxism) – £375 Botulinum toxin injections into the masseter muscles reduce their activity and help manage the jaw pain, headaches, and dental damage associated with teeth grinding. This is the same procedure and same consultation pathway.

What to expect at your appointment

A consultation with Dr Dan is required before treatment. He will take a history, confirm the diagnosis of primary hyperhidrosis, discuss the treatment in detail, and arrange a treatment date approximately two weeks later. The consultation fee (£150) is redeemable against treatment cost if treatment proceeds within one month.

At the treatment appointment, the skin is cleaned, local anaesthetic cream is applied, and the injections are given. The area may appear slightly pink or red for a few hours afterwards. Most patients notice a significant reduction in sweating within three to four days.

Frequently asked questions

How effective is Botox for excessive sweating?

Clinical studies and clinical experience consistently show a reduction in sweating of more than 80% for most patients. The treatment is one of the most effective available for primary hyperhidrosis.

How long does hyperhidrosis treatment last?

Results typically last around six months. When sweating gradually returns, treatment can be repeated.

Does hyperhidrosis treatment with Botox hurt?

Local anaesthetic cream is applied before treatment to minimise discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as mild.

Can I have the treatment on the same day as the consultation?

No. A two-week interval between consultation and treatment is standard. This allows time for any pre-treatment questions to be addressed and ensures the treatment plan is appropriate.

Will Botox for hyperhidrosis affect my normal sweating?

The treatment reduces excessive sweating in the targeted area. Normal sweating elsewhere in the body is unaffected.

Is there any downtime after hyperhidrosis treatment?

No. Most patients return to their usual activities immediately. Strenuous exercise is best avoided for 24 hours.

How often can I repeat the treatment?

Treatment can be repeated when sweating returns, typically after around six months. There is no restriction on the number of treatment courses.

Is hyperhidrosis treatment available on the NHS?

Botulinum toxin for hyperhidrosis is available through some NHS dermatology departments, but access is limited and waiting times can be long. Private treatment at The Wright Practice is available promptly.
