Women's Health at The Wright Practice, Harley Street

Women’s health is about far more than managing symptoms. Hormonal changes, menstrual health, fertility, menopause, body composition, sexual wellbeing, energy levels and long-term disease prevention are all closely interconnected and can have a profound impact on quality of life. At The Wright Practice, Dr Susan Jain and Dr Dan Wright take a personalised and evidence-based approach. Many women are told that symptoms such as fatigue, low libido, brain fog, poor sleep, weight gain, anxiety or changes in mood are simply a normal part of ageing. They are not. Whilst hormonal changes can contribute, these symptoms may also reflect thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency, sleep disorders, metabolic health concerns or other treatable underlying factors. Our role is to identify what is most relevant to you and build a tailored management plan.

Perimenopause and Menopause

The menopause is a natural stage of life, but the hormonal changes of the perimenopausal transition, the years before periods stop, can have a significant impact on physical health, emotional wellbeing, work performance and relationships. Perimenopause often begins in a woman’s early-to-mid forties, sometimes earlier, and can last for several years before periods stop completely. Symptoms develop gradually and are frequently misattributed to stress, overwork or depression.

Common symptoms include hot flushes and night sweats, disrupted sleep, brain fog and difficulty concentrating, mood changes including low mood and anxiety, reduced libido, vaginal dryness, joint pain, changes in body composition and irregular or heavier periods. These are not symptoms to simply manage or suppress: they reflect hormonal change that is both clinically assessable and, in most cases, treatable.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

HRT is one of the most evidence-supported interventions in medicine for the management of menopausal symptoms. Modern body-identical HRT, using hormones structurally identical to those produced naturally by the body, has a substantially better safety profile than the older synthetic formulations that generated concern in the early 2000s. At The Wright Practice, Dr Susan Jain assesses each patient individually, taking a detailed clinical history before recommending HRT, discusses the evidence around benefits and risks clearly, and provides ongoing monitoring. The right type, dose and route of HRT depends on your specific symptoms, medical history and personal preferences.

Female Testosterone Therapy

Testosterone is not a male hormone: women produce it too, and declining levels, which often begin before menopause, are associated with reduced libido, fatigue, poor concentration and a general sense of reduced vitality. Female testosterone therapy is increasingly recognised as an evidence-based component of comprehensive menopausal care. At The Wright Practice, testosterone therapy for women is prescribed at physiological doses, monitored carefully and used as part of an integrated approach to hormonal health rather than as a standalone treatment.

Fertility and Pre-Conception Health

Whether you are planning a pregnancy soon or thinking ahead, a pre-conception health assessment can identify nutritional deficiencies, hormonal factors, infectious diseases and other concerns that may affect fertility or pregnancy outcomes. Taking a proactive approach before conception is almost always more effective than a reactive one once difficulties arise.

A fertility assessment at The Wright Practice may include AMH (anti-Mullerian hormone) to assess ovarian reserve, FSH and LH, thyroid function, full haematology and nutritional assessment, infectious disease screening and a review of current medications. For patients with PCOS, we can assess hormonal status, discuss the implications for fertility and menstrual health, and provide a clear management plan. Pre-conception nutritional optimisation, including folic acid, vitamin D, iodine and iron, is also discussed as part of the assessment.

Menstrual and Hormonal Health

Heavy periods, irregular cycles, painful periods, premenstrual syndrome (PMS and PMDD) and conditions such as PCOS and suspected endometriosis are medical conditions, not inconveniences to be tolerated. They warrant proper clinical assessment and management. At The Wright Practice, Dr Susan Jain provides a thorough evaluation of menstrual and hormonal concerns, with targeted blood testing, clear explanation of findings, and a management plan that takes the patient’s priorities into account.

Women’s Sexual Health

Sexual health concerns in women, including low libido, pain during sex (dyspareunia), vaginal dryness, recurrent thrush, bacterial vaginosis and HPV-related concerns, are among the most frequently underdiscussed areas of women’s health. All are clinically assessable, most are treatable, and none require an awkward conversation to address. The Wright Practice provides a completely confidential and non-judgmental environment for women to raise sexual health concerns. Full STI screening, Gardasil HPV vaccination, and cervical health assessment are all available.

Preventative Health Screening for Women

Women have specific preventative screening needs across their lifespan that extend well beyond what NHS programmes currently offer. At The Wright Practice, the Wellperson health screening programme provides a structured annual framework covering comprehensive blood testing, full physical examination, body composition analysis and a personalised action plan. The Executive Wellperson adds ECG, hormone testing and chest X-ray. The TruCheck multi-cancer blood test, prostate MRI equivalent (breast and gynaecological imaging), bone health assessment and thyroid evaluation can all be arranged as part of a personalised screening programme.

Our Approach to Women’s Health

Dr Susan Jain brings extensive clinical experience in anaesthetics, intensive care and women’s health to The Wright Practice, alongside Dr Dan Wright’s background in general practice and preventative medicine. Their combined approach is evidence-based, honest and unhurried. They believe that many women are underserved by a system that too often normalises symptoms that are neither normal nor inevitable, and that the right assessment, followed by the right management, can make a significant difference to quality of life, energy and long-term health.
