Comprehensive STI Screening in London

Private comprehensive STI screening at 101 Harley Street. Personalised testing for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, hepatitis and more. Same-day appointments available.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are extremely common and affect people of all ages, backgrounds and relationship statuses. Many infections cause no symptoms at all, meaning it is entirely possible to feel well whilst carrying an infection. Routine screening remains one of the most effective ways of protecting both your own health and the health of your partners. Early diagnosis allows prompt treatment, reduces the risk of complications and helps prevent onward transmission.

At The Wright Practice, 101 Harley Street, comprehensive STI screening is designed to be thorough, personalised and entirely free from judgement. Whether you are attending for a routine check, following a new sexual encounter or because you are experiencing symptoms, our approach ensures you leave with a clear understanding of your results and what, if anything, needs to happen next.

For a detailed explanation of how STI testing works and what to expect, see our guide at Understanding STI Testing and for those who would prefer to begin the process at home, information on self-sampling is available at Home STI Testing

Why Routine Screening Matters

Many STIs, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV and hepatitis, can be present for weeks, months or even years without causing noticeable symptoms. By the time symptoms appear, complications may already have developed. Routine STI screening is recommended for anyone who is sexually active, regardless of whether symptoms are present.

Regular screening allows early diagnosis and treatment, protects your own long-term health, and reduces the risk of unknowingly passing infections to partners. The frequency of testing that is right for you will depend on individual factors including your number of partners, the type of sexual contact you have and your use of barrier contraception. Our clinicians are happy to help you establish the most appropriate screening schedule for your circumstances.

A Personalised Approach to Testing

Rather than applying a standard panel to every patient, The Wright Practice tailors screening recommendations to the individual. Recommendations are based on:

  • Current symptoms, if any are present
  • Sexual practices, including the type of contact and anatomical sites involved
  • Number of sexual partners, including any recent changes
  • Travel history, particularly to regions where specific infections are more prevalent
  • Previous infections and treatment history
  • Timing of any potential exposure

This approach ensures that the right investigations are performed at the right time, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all panel that may miss infections relevant to your situation or include tests that are unnecessary for you.

What Infections Are Screened For?

Comprehensive screening at The Wright Practice can include testing for a wide range of sexually transmitted infections. Common infections included in screening panels are:

Not all of these infections will be relevant to every patient. Your clinician will discuss which tests are most appropriate based on your individual history and risk factors.

What Types of Samples Are Used?

Depending on which infections are being screened for and which anatomical sites may have been exposed, testing may involve one or more of the following:

  • Blood tests — used for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and certain other infections
  • Urine samples — commonly used for chlamydia and gonorrhoea when the urethra is the potential site of infection
  • Vaginal swabs — self-taken or clinician-collected, commonly used for chlamydia and gonorrhoea
  • Cervical swabs — taken during examination when clinically indicated
  • Rectal swabs — recommended when there has been receptive anal intercourse
  • Throat swabs — recommended when there has been oral contact, particularly for gonorrhoea

Many patients are unaware that certain infections, particularly gonorrhoea, frequently infect the throat and rectum without producing any symptoms at all. Testing only urine in someone who has had anal or oral contact may therefore miss infections at these sites. Our clinicians will advise on site-specific testing where relevant.

The Importance of Testing Timing and Window Periods

One of the most important aspects of STI screening is understanding that different infections become detectable at different times following exposure. Testing too soon after potential exposure may produce a negative result even when an infection is present, because the infection has not yet reached levels detectable by the test. This is known as the window period.

Our role is not simply to provide testing but also to help you understand which investigations are most appropriate, how results should be interpreted and whether any follow-up testing may be required. For a detailed explanation of window periods and how they affect testing decisions, see our guide at Understanding STI Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have an STI screen?

This depends on your individual circumstances. Many sexual health guidelines recommend annual screening for sexually active adults, with more frequent testing every three to six months recommended for individuals with multiple partners or higher-risk sexual practices. Your clinician at The Wright Practice can help you determine the most appropriate schedule based on your personal situation.

Do I need to have symptoms to be tested?

No. The majority of common STIs, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV, frequently cause no symptoms at all. Testing is therefore recommended on a routine basis, not only when symptoms are present. Many patients are diagnosed through routine screening without having suspected any infection.

How quickly will I receive my results?

Turnaround times vary depending on the specific tests requested. Many results are available the same day or within 24 to 48 hours. Blood test results for infections such as HIV, syphilis and hepatitis are typically available within one to two working days. Your clinician will advise on expected timings at the time of your appointment.

What happens if a result is positive?

A positive result does not need to be alarming. Most STIs are straightforward to treat when diagnosed promptly. If a result is positive, your clinician will discuss the findings with you, explain the treatment options available and advise on partner notification where relevant. You will be supported through each step of the process.

Is my information kept confidential?

Absolutely. All consultations and results at The Wright Practice are treated with complete discretion. Your medical records are private and will not be shared without your consent. We operate in accordance with the highest standards of medical confidentiality.
