Minor Procedures & Medical Treatments

Minor Procedures and Medical Treatments at The Wright Practice, Harley Street

Not every medical problem requires medication, hospital referral or surgery. Many common conditions can be assessed and treated safely and effectively in an outpatient clinic setting, often with minimal discomfort and little or no downtime. At The Wright Practice, we offer a range of minor procedures and medical treatments designed to provide convenient access to expert care without the delays associated with secondary care referrals.

Before any procedure, we perform a thorough assessment to confirm that treatment is appropriate, and to discuss expected benefits, limitations and any risks involved. Where there is uncertainty about a diagnosis, we will recommend further investigation or specialist referral rather than proceed.

Ear Wax Removal

Excess ear wax is a common cause of reduced hearing, a sensation of blockage or fullness in the ear, tinnitus, itching and discomfort. Many people attempt to remove wax themselves using cotton buds, which typically pushes wax deeper into the canal and can cause injury. At The Wright Practice, we examine the ears carefully before any treatment to confirm that wax is the cause of symptoms and that the ear canal and eardrum are suitable for irrigation.

Pulsed irrigation uses a controlled stream of warm water to gently remove excess wax from the ear canal. The procedure is usually quick, well tolerated and can often provide immediate improvement in hearing and comfort. Not all blocked ears are caused by wax, and not all patients are suitable for irrigation. If wax is not the cause, or if the ear examination raises any other concern, we will advise on the most appropriate management rather than proceed with treatment.

Cryotherapy for Skin Lesions

Cryotherapy is an effective outpatient treatment for a range of benign skin lesions, using liquid nitrogen to freeze abnormal or unwanted tissue so that it breaks down and is replaced by healthy skin over the following days and weeks. Conditions commonly treated with cryotherapy include viral warts and verrucas, skin tags, seborrhoeic keratoses, certain benign skin lesions and selected sun-damaged lesions such as actinic keratoses.

Before treatment, the lesion is assessed carefully to confirm cryotherapy is appropriate. If there is any uncertainty about the nature of a lesion, further assessment or specialist referral will be recommended. Treatment takes only a few minutes and can usually be performed during a routine appointment. Patients typically experience a brief stinging sensation during treatment, and the treated area may become red, swollen or develop a blister before healing over the following days. More than one treatment session may occasionally be needed for larger or more resistant lesions.

Skin Lesion Assessment

Any new, changing or concerning skin lesion should be assessed by a clinician. At The Wright Practice, Dr Dan Wright provides clinical assessment of moles, cysts, lipomas, warts, skin tags and other skin changes, with dermoscopy where appropriate to aid diagnosis. Where a lesion can be safely removed as a minor procedure, this can often be arranged. Where there is any clinical concern about a lesion, onward referral for biopsy or specialist assessment is arranged promptly.

A general skin and mole assessment is also included as standard in our Wellperson health screening appointments. If you have noticed a new lesion, a change in an existing mole, or any skin concern, an assessment appointment can be arranged separately from a full screening check.

Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a condition where the body produces far more sweat than is needed for temperature regulation. It can affect the underarms, hands, feet or face, and for many patients it is a source of significant daily embarrassment and practical difficulty. Treatment with botulinum toxin (Botox) injections temporarily blocks the nerve signals that trigger sweat gland activity, reducing sweating by more than 80% for most patients with results lasting around six months.

An initial consultation is required at £150 (redeemable against treatment cost if treatment proceeds within one month). Underarm and foot treatment is £595 per area. Hand treatment is £475. The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area treated. Local anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand and most patients tolerate the treatment well, returning to normal activities the same day. Strenuous exercise is best avoided for 24 hours. Full detail, including the treatment protocol for bruxism (teeth grinding, £375 per session), is on the dedicated Hyperhidrosis page.

Our Approach to Minor Procedures

Minor procedures at The Wright Practice are performed with the same thoroughness and clinical rigour as any other service. Every procedure is preceded by a proper assessment, every diagnosis is confirmed before treatment proceeds, and every patient is given a clear explanation of what to expect before, during and after treatment.

If a concern falls outside what can be appropriately managed in our outpatient setting, we will say so clearly and arrange the right onward care.
